Good lighting design advice starts long before anyone picks a fitting. It starts with how a room is used, who uses it and at what time of day. Get that right and the rest follows. Get it wrong and no amount of expensive hardware will rescue the result.

At Lightmaster we share what we know through open days, seminars and client meetings, and we like to leave a project knowing the people in it understand their lighting better than they did before we arrived. This guide gathers the advice we give most often, so if you are planning a scheme at home you have somewhere sensible to begin.

Start with the room, not the fittings

The most common mistake we see is a specification built around products rather than purpose. Walk through the space and ask what actually happens in it. Where do you read? Where do you chop, work, unwind, walk through in the dark at midnight? Each of those answers points to a different layer of light.

A well designed room usually carries three or four layers working together:

  • Ambient light for general background level
  • Task light aimed where you need to see detail
  • Accent light to pick out artwork, texture, joinery or planting
  • Decorative light where the fitting itself is part of the look

Layering is what separates a scheme that feels considered from one that simply feels bright. Our lighting design service is built around exactly this process.

Downlights: why the grid is the wrong answer

Left to their own devices, a contractor will set your downlights out in a neat grid. It looks tidy on a drawing and it is almost always wrong. A grid delivers far too much light, costs more in fittings and adds needlessly to your energy bills.

You do not need sixteen symmetrically placed downlights to light a room. One of the kitchens in our project gallery uses five. Place downlights where light is needed, which usually means close to walls to graze surfaces, or directly over a worktop or island, rather than spaced evenly across a ceiling void.

A useful test: if you can see the pattern of the lights before you notice the effect they create, there are too many.

Keep your lamps consistent

If you are using retro-fit lamps rather than integrated fittings, make sure every lamp in the room shares the same colour temperature, CRI and technology. A halogen next to an LED is obvious the moment both are switched on, and CFL alongside either is worse. One warm pool of light beside a cooler one reads as a fault, not a feature.

Pick your colour temperature once and stick to it across the space. For most homes, something in the warm range suits living areas, with a slightly cooler option only where genuinely useful.

LED tape without the guesswork

LED tape is where most DIY schemes come unstuck, and understandably so. What voltage do you need? Which power supply will run the run efficiently? Does it need diffusing? Does it need an IP rating? Each answer changes the others.

A few principles that hold true most of the time:

  • Longer runs generally favour higher voltage tape to limit voltage drop along the strip
  • Size the driver with headroom rather than running it at its absolute limit
  • If you can see the tape itself rather than the light it produces, it needs a diffuser or a deeper channel
  • Anything in a bathroom, kitchen splashback or outdoors needs the rating checked properly, not assumed

Task lighting: get it right in kitchens and reading spots

Task lighting is not a luxury. You cannot chop an onion safely if you cannot tell where the onion ends and your fingers begin.

The single rule worth remembering is to keep the light source in front of you rather than behind you. Light coming over your shoulder puts your own shadow exactly where you are trying to see.

In kitchens, a pendant over an island gives excellent task light where there is height to carry it. Where there is not, LED tape under the wall units washes the worktop cleanly. For reading, a directional floor or table lamp beside the chair beats a brighter ceiling any day of the week.

Picture lighting and accent lighting

For artwork you want either a spotlight or an asymmetric downlight. Asymmetric fittings are particularly good because you can select a beam angle to suit the size of the piece, and the light throws forward onto the wall rather than straight down.

Distance from the wall matters as much as the fitting. Too close and you get a hot spot across the top of the frame. Too far and the wash spills past the edges and lights the sofa instead. Our design team works to a chart that sets the right offset for a given ceiling height and picture size, and it is the sort of detail that makes the difference between a picture that glows and one that looks spotlit.

IP ratings and exterior lighting

IP ratings cause more failures outdoors than any other single factor, usually because the fitting is rated correctly and the connections are not.

An IP67 driver paired with an IP67 fitting will only keep working if the joint between the two is sealed inside a suitably rated enclosure. Exposed wiring under a bit of shelter is not protection. Water finds its way in, corrosion follows, and the fault appears months later in the middle of winter.

Plan the whole run outdoors: fitting, cable, joints, driver and enclosure. If any link in that chain is unrated, the chain is unrated.

Lighting for retail: why CRI matters

This one is slightly more technical, but it costs shops real money. Colour rendering index, or CRI, describes how faithfully a light source reveals colour. Low CRI light makes products look flat, grey and unappealing.

Supermarkets worked this out years ago, which is why fresh produce looks so good under the right light. Clothing retailers have been slower. Too many high street changing rooms use a single downlight in the centre of the cubicle, which throws awkward shadows the moment you turn to check the back of a garment, under light that flatters nobody. It is difficult to sell a £70 dress that way.

If you are lighting retail space, specify high CRI, light the vertical surfaces where the product actually sits, and treat changing rooms as seriously as the shop floor.

Dimming and control

Dimming is not just about mood. It is what allows one room to serve breakfast, homework, dinner and a quiet evening without ever feeling wrong.

Check that your driver, fitting and dimmer are compatible before you buy. Mismatched combinations are the usual cause of flicker, buzz and a dimming range that dies at twenty per cent. Where a scheme has several layers, a lighting control system lets you set scenes once and forget about it, rather than juggling four switch plates every evening.

Common lighting design mistakes to avoid

  • Spacing downlights in a grid rather than placing them by purpose
  • Mixing colour temperatures within one room
  • Relying on a single central fitting for the whole space
  • Forgetting task light where detailed work happens
  • Choosing fittings before deciding what each area needs
  • Assuming an outdoor fitting is sealed without checking the connections
  • Leaving dimming compatibility until after everything is installed

When to call a lighting designer

Plenty of this you can do yourself, and we would rather you did it well than not at all.
