Getting the lighting right in a church is rarely a simple matter of swapping old fittings for new ones. These are buildings with long histories, protective legislation, awkward geometry and congregations who notice every change. A church lighting consultant exists to sit between all of those pressures and produce a scheme that works for worship, for the fabric of the building and for the people paying for it.

What a Church Lighting Consultant Actually Does

The role goes well beyond specifying fittings. A consultant surveys the building, measures existing light levels, listens to how the space is used across a typical week, then designs a scheme that answers those needs without damaging the architecture or the budget.

Most church projects involve a survey visit, a written report with recommendations, lighting calculations, drawings showing fitting positions and aiming angles, and support through the approval process. Many consultants also help with tendering, so the congregation can compare quotes on a level playing field rather than trying to interpret three wildly different proposals.

The independence matters. A consultant who does not manufacture or install fittings has no reason to push a particular brand. That neutrality is worth a great deal when a project runs into five figures.

Why Churches Need Specialist Advice

Listed Building Consent

Around 45 per cent of all Grade I listed buildings in England are churches. Any alteration affecting the character of a listed building needs consent, and for churches in use by the Church of England that consent runs through the faculty system rather than the local authority.

Rewiring, new cable routes, fixing points in stonework and even the visual impact of a fitting can all trigger scrutiny. A consultant who has been through this process repeatedly knows what the Diocesan Advisory Committee will question and how to present a scheme that gets approved without three rounds of revisions.

Difficult Architecture

Vaulted ceilings, clerestory windows, deep chancels, rood screens, pillars that block sightlines, ceilings that sit twenty metres above the floor. Church interiors defeat standard lighting layouts. Reaching a fitting for maintenance can require a scaffold tower or a cherry picker, which pushes the argument towards long life sources and careful positioning.

Multiple Uses in One Space

A modern church might host a said service at eight in the morning, a sung eucharist at ten, a toddler group on Tuesday, a concert on Friday and a wedding on Saturday. Each of those needs different light. Uniform brightness suits a community hall function. A choral evensong wants something softer with the chancel lifted. Concerts need performers lit properly while the audience sits in lower light.

A single switch cannot serve all of that. Scene setting controls, properly commissioned, can.

Lighting Levels and Standards

The relevant guidance in the UK comes from CIBSE and the Society of Light and Lighting. Typical recommendations sit around 100 to 150 lux for the general body of the church, rising to 200 to 300 lux at the lectern, pulpit and altar where reading takes place. Vestries and working areas need more.

These are starting points rather than rules. An ancient building with dark stone walls absorbs a great deal of light, and a scheme measured purely on lux at floor level can still feel gloomy if the vertical surfaces stay dark. Good consultants look at the whole visual field, not just the horizontal plane.

Congregational age matters too. Older eyes need considerably more light to read the same hymn book, and glare becomes more troublesome. A scheme designed for a congregation with an average age of seventy looks different from one designed for a student chaplaincy.

LED Conversion

Most enquiries now involve replacing tungsten, halogen or old discharge lamps with LED. The savings are substantial. A church running 40 halogen floods at 300 watts each burns 12 kilowatts when everything is on. The LED equivalent might draw 2 kilowatts for the same or better light output.

Lamp life is the other half of the argument. Replacing a lamp forty feet up is expensive whether the lamp costs five pounds or fifty. Moving from a 2,000 hour halogen to a 50,000 hour LED changes the maintenance picture completely.

The pitfalls are worth knowing about. Cheap LED retrofits often produce a cold, flat light that flattens carved stone and makes timber look grey. Colour temperature around 2700K to 3000K generally suits historic interiors, with a colour rendering index above 90 if stained glass, wall paintings or gilding are involved. Dimming compatibility catches people out constantly, particularly where old trailing edge dimmers meet new drivers.

Emergency Lighting and Compliance

Churches are public buildings and need emergency lighting to BS 5266. That means illuminated escape routes, exit signage, and lighting at fire alarm call points and firefighting equipment. Monthly and annual testing is a legal duty for the responsible person, usually a churchwarden.

Older churches frequently have emergency systems that were installed decades ago, never tested properly, and would fail immediately in a real evacuation. A lighting review is a sensible moment to bring this up to standard.

Costs

A survey and outline report for a parish church typically runs from a few hundred pounds to around fifteen hundred, depending on size and complexity. Full design work including drawings, calculations and faculty support commonly falls between two and six thousand.

Installation is the larger figure. A modest scheme in a small parish church might come in around ten thousand. A large medieval church with high level access requirements, full scene control and chancel highlighting can reach fifty thousand or more, with scaffolding alone accounting for a significant slice.

Set against that, a church spending three thousand a year on lighting electricity that drops to six hundred is recovering a meaningful amount annually, and that is before maintenance savings.

Funding

Grant sources worth investigating include the National Churches Trust, county churches trusts, the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme for VAT recovery on eligible works, and various heritage funds. Some energy efficiency schemes also apply. Local authorities occasionally contribute where a church functions as a community venue.

Applications are more successful when supported by a professional report showing the current situation, the proposed improvement and the projected savings. This is another argument for bringing in a consultant early rather than after the appeal has already launched.

Choosing a Consultant

Ask what they have done in buildings like yours. Ask whether they are independent of suppliers. Ask to see a sample report. Ask about faculty experience specifically, because a consultant who has never dealt with a Diocesan Advisory Committee will learn on your project and at your expense.

Membership of the Institution of Lighting Professionals or the Society of Light and Lighting is a reasonable indicator of competence. So is a willingness to visit at night, with the existing lighting on, rather than making judgements from a daytime visit and a set of photographs.

Trial installations are worth insisting on for anything substantial. Seeing two or three sample fittings in position, at night, in your building, settles arguments that could otherwise run for months.

Getting Started

The usual sequence is straightforward enough. Work out what is wrong with the current lighting and what the building needs to do. Gather the congregation’s views, since they are the ones sitting under it. Bring in a consultant for a survey. Take the report to the PCC and the DAC. Apply for funding. Tender the work. Install, commission and hand over.

Start early. Faculty applications take time, grant rounds have deadlines, and contractors who specialise in historic buildings book up well in advance.
