The most effective bedroom lighting tips are to remove the single central ceiling light, layer three or four low level sources instead, keep every bulb at 2700K or warmer, and put everything on a dimmer with a switch at both the bed and the door. Bedrooms need soft, indirect light at low levels, not bright overhead light.

  • Position matters more than product. A single central ceiling light sits in your eyeline when you lie down and throws your own shadow into every wardrobe, and nothing at all should be placed directly above the bed, because dimming a downlight does not remove the glare.
  • 2700K is the bedroom ceiling, not the bedroom target. Dim to warm lamps that drop to around 1800K at low output suit the body’s evening rhythm far better than a fixed colour temperature.
  • Most bedrooms are lit two to three times brighter than is comfortable. Aim for 100 to 150 lux of general light and add 300 lux only where you actually read.

  • Control is the part people regret skipping. Fit a switch at the bed and at the door, and specify drivers that dim smoothly to 1 percent rather than stopping at 20.

Why Bedroom Lighting Deserves More Thought Than Any Other Room

Your bedroom is the only room where the goal of the lighting is to help you stop using the room. Every other space is lit to help you see and do. A bedroom is lit to help you wind down, then sleep, then wake gently.

That changes the brief completely.

Light entering the eye in the evening suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals to your body that it is time to sleep. The effect is strongest in the blue part of the spectrum, peaking around 480 nanometres, which is exactly the range that cool white bulbs and phone screens emit most of. Research collected by the Sleep Foundation links evening light exposure to delayed sleep onset and more fragmented sleep.

So the two questions that matter in a bedroom are how much light, and what colour. Almost every mistake in lighting design for bedrooms comes from getting one of those two wrong.

1. Remove the Central Ceiling Light

A single pendant in the middle of the ceiling is the default in most British homes and it is the worst possible position for a bedroom. It puts the light source directly in your eyeline when you lie down, and it puts the light behind you whenever you look into a wardrobe or a drawer, so your own body casts a shadow over the thing you are trying to find.

If you cannot remove the ceiling point, keep the pendant purely decorative, fit a deep or opaque shade, and never rely on it as the main light.

2. Never Put a Downlight Over the Bed

This is the single most common fault we see. A recessed downlight above the pillow gives you a face full of glare every time you lie back, and dimming it does not fix the problem because the source is still in your field of view.

Position downlights around the perimeter of the room instead, roughly 700mm from the wall, aimed at wardrobes, drawers and dressers where you actually need to see.

3. Keep Every Bulb at 2700K or Warmer

Colour temperature matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else in the house.

Better still, specify dim to warm lamps. These shift from around 2700K at full output down to roughly 1800K at low output, mimicking the way a candle or a sunset behaves. The light gets warmer as it gets dimmer, which is what your circadian system expects.

4. Aim for Low Light Levels, Not Bright Ones

Most bedrooms are overlit. As a working guide:

  • General bedroom ambience: 100 to 150 lux
  • Reading in bed: around 300 lux measured at the page
  • Dressing and mirror areas: 300 to 500 lux
  • Night navigation: under 10 lux

You will notice the reading figure is higher than the ambient figure. That is the point of layering. You do not raise the whole room to reading level, you add one focused source where the task is.

5. Put Everything on a Dimmer, and Dim Deeper Than You Think

A dimmer that only reaches 20 percent is not much use in a bedroom. Specify LED drivers that dim smoothly to 1 percent, and check the dimming curve, not just the headline figure. Cheap drivers snap off, flicker or shimmer at the bottom of the range, which is precisely where a bedroom lives.

Trailing edge dimming is generally smoother than leading edge for LED loads. If you are planning a whole house scheme, a dedicated lighting control system gives you far better low end performance than a retail dimmer plate.

6. Fit a Switch at the Bed and at the Door

Two way switching is the tip people thank us for most.

You want to be able to walk into a dark room and turn something on, then get into bed and turn everything off without getting up again. Split the circuits so the bed switch controls the bedside and low level lighting, and the door switch controls general light. A simple keypad lets you set an evening scene, a reading scene and a night scene on one button each.

7. Get Bedside Light Heights Right

  • Pendants: bottom of the shade roughly 500mm above the mattress top
  • Wall lights: centre of the fitting roughly 1.4m from finished floor level, or around 500mm above the mattress
  • Table lamps: bottom of the shade at or just below seated eye height, so you see light on the page and not the bulb

Always use an adjustable or directional bedside light if anyone shares the bed. One person reading should not wake the other.

8. Specify a High Colour Rendering Index for Dressing Areas

If you get dressed or apply make up in the bedroom, colour accuracy is not a luxury. Specify CRI 90 as a minimum and CRI 97 where you can, particularly around mirrors and inside wardrobes. Low CRI light makes navy read as black and makes skin tones look flat and grey.

9. Light Mirrors From the Front, Never From Above

A downlight above a vanity mirror throws your own face into shadow, which is the opposite of what you need. Use a mirror with integrated diffused forward facing light, or fit two vertical sources either side of the mirror at face height. Front, soft, even.

10. Use Sensors Inside Wardrobes and Walk In Cupboards

LED tape on a door sensor inside a wardrobe removes the need to turn on the main room light to find a shirt. Keep the tape hidden behind a lip or in a channel so you see the glow and not the diodes. In a walk in wardrobe, a discreet spotlight aimed at the hanging rail avoids the shadow problem entirely.

11. Light Vaulted Ceilings Upwards, Not Through the Beams

If you have a vaulted or exposed beam ceiling, use adjustable gimbals or spots to wash light up into the eaves so it reflects back down softly. Avoid fixing fittings directly onto a beam. The beam is the feature, and a fitting bolted to it reads as an afterthought.

12. Plan Blackout and Daylight Together With the Artificial Light

Lighting design does not stop at fittings. Automated blinds or curtains on the bed switch let you control morning light as deliberately as evening light, which is the other half of the circadian equation. One caution: if you stand between a lamp and a thin curtain, you are visible in silhouette from outside. Check the layering of your window treatments as well as your lighting.

A well designed bedroom usually needs at least three of the four. A room with only General lighting always feels flat, and a room with only Effect lighting is atmospheric but useless at 7am. You can see the method applied across real projects in our lighting gallery.

How Many Lights Should a Bedroom Have?

A bedroom needs a minimum of three separate light sources on at least two switched circuits. A typical double bedroom of 12 to 16 square metres works well with four to six perimeter downlights, two adjustable bedside lights and one concealed effect source such as tape behind the headboard.

Scale up with room size and with the number of activities. If the room contains a desk, a dressing table or a reading chair, each of those is a task area and each needs its own light. Larger rooms benefit from zoning, so one half can be dim while the other is in use.

How to Light a Bedroom Without Overhead Lighting

Plenty of period properties and rented flats have no ceiling rose at all. This is not a problem, and in a bedroom it is arguably an advantage.

  • Table lamps on bedside tables and a chest of drawers. Two lamps at opposite corners of a room create a far better result than one central light.
  • Floor lamps, particularly an uplighter in a corner. Bouncing light off the ceiling gives you a soft general wash from a plug socket.
  • Plug in wall lights either side of the bed, which free up bedside table space entirely.
  • LED tape behind a headboard, along a shelf or under a bed frame for low level effect and night navigation.
  • A dimmable smart bulb in every lamp, grouped so one command dims the room.

Aim for three to five sources at different heights. Height variation is what stops a lamp only scheme feeling gloomy.

Are Spotlights Good for Bedrooms?

Spotlights work well in bedrooms for task and accent light, and poorly as the only light source. Use them around the perimeter aimed at wardrobes, artwork or a reading chair. Avoid a grid of them across the ceiling, and never place one above the pillow.

Check ceiling void depth before specifying. Shallow recess and surface mounted spots solve most low void problems, which is common in upstairs bedrooms with limited joist space.

Bedroom Lighting for Children’s Rooms

Children’s rooms change faster than any other room in the house, so design for the fitting to stay and the style to change.

  • Dimmable deep baffled downlights around the perimeter, useful for night feeds and later for a child who wants to control how dark the room gets
  • A low level floor washer as a night light, which is far better than leaving a main light on
  • A central pendant with an easily swapped shade, so the room can be restyled without an electrician
  • Nothing at all directly above the bed

What colour light is best for a bedroom?

Warm white at 2700K or lower. For the hour before sleep, 1800K to 2200K is better still because it contains almost no blue light. Avoid anything at 4000K or above.

Why should you not sleep with the lights on?

Light at night suppresses melatonin production, disrupts your circadian rhythm and causes more fragmented sleep. It also interferes with the repair processes that happen during deep sleep. If you need light to navigate at night, use a very low level warm floor washer rather than a main light.

Are LED lights safe in a bedroom?

Yes. LEDs run cooler, use less energy and last longer than incandescent lamps. For bedrooms specifically, choose warm white LEDs at 2700K or below, with CRI 90 or higher, and confirm they are dimmable with your chosen dimmer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a qualified electrician for any hard wired installation.

How bright should a bedroom light be?

Around 100 to 150 lux for general ambience, rising to about 300 lux at the page for reading and 300 to 500 lux at a mirror. Most bedrooms are lit at two or three times the comfortable level.

How can I improve my bedroom lighting without rewiring?
